Six UK Researchers Selected for DOE’s Historic Genesis Mission
Six University of Kentucky researchers have been selected to take part in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, a historic national initiative that unites artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and quantum systems to accelerate scientific discovery in energy, research, and national security.
Two UK faculty are leading Genesis Mission projects as principal investigators: Sean Bailey, Ph.D. (Pigman College of Engineering), whose work addresses power-grid resilience during extreme weather, and Chad Risko, Ph.D. (College of Arts and Sciences), whose research focuses on the design of semiconductor interfaces. Four additional UK researchers serve as co-investigators on projects led by partner institutions: Savio Poovathingal, Ph.D. (Pigman College of Engineering), and Erin Peters, Ph.D., Renee Fatemi, Ph.D., and Wolfgang Korsch, Ph.D. (College of Arts and Sciences).
The Genesis Mission selected 278 projects from more than 5,000 submissions spanning 342 institutions nationwide. Participating teams will draw on advanced high-performance computing resources, including DOE national laboratory supercomputers and secure cloud-based AI environments, to tackle some of the nation’s most pressing scientific challenges.
